High School - Grade 10
Lesson 2: Advanced Connectors
The Many Ways to Say "Because..."
Why So Many "Because"s?
You've already learned `-(아/어)서` and `-(으)니까`. Why are there so many ways to say "because"?
Each one carries a specific **nuance**. Using the wrong one can sound unnatural or even rude. This lesson breaks down the three most common forms so you can choose the right one every time.
1. -(아/어)서
This is the most common, neutral form. It shows a logical, natural sequence of events or a general reason.
비가 와서 길이 막혀요.
"The road is blocked because it's raining." (A natural, logical result).
Crucial Rule: Cannot be used with commands or suggestions.
비가 와서 우산을 가져가세요. (Incorrect!)
You cannot use `-(아/어)서` to provide a reason for an order.
2. -(으)니까
This form gives a reason that is more subjective, a personal discovery, or the basis for a command/suggestion.
비가 오니까 우산을 가져가세요.
"Because it's raining, please take an umbrella." (Correct! Used with a command).
집에 오니까 아무도 없었어요.
"(When I came) home, I discovered nobody was there." (Expresses a discovery).
3. (기) 때문에
This shows a strong, direct cause and effect. It's common in formal writing and when you really want to emphasize the reason. It's most often used with nouns.
Noun + 때문에
"because of (Noun)"
눈 때문에 학교에 늦었어요.
"I was late for school because of the snow." (Strong, direct reason).
Verb + -기 때문에
"because (Verb)..."
지금은 바쁘기 때문에 나중에 전화할게요.
"Because I am busy right now, I will call you later." (More formal/emphatic).
