High School - Grade 12
Lesson 1: Mastering Nuance
의성어 (Sounds) & 의태어 (Actions)
What are these "Nuance Words"?
Korean uses two special types of adverbs that give the language its unique flavor. English has these, but Korean uses them *all the time*.
1. 의성어 (ui-seong-eo): Onomatopoeia
These are words that mimic sounds (e.g., "woof woof," "drip drop," "bang").
2. 의태어 (ui-tae-eo): Mimetic Words
These are words that mimic actions, appearances, or states (e.g., "sparklingly," "waddlingly," "in a smiling way").
Part 1: 의성어 (Mimicking Sounds)
멍멍 (meong-meong)
Sound: "Woof woof"
Meaning: The sound a dog makes.
콜록콜록 (kol-lok-kol-lok)
Sound: "Cough cough"
Meaning: The sound of a dry cough.
두근두근 (du-geun-du-geun)
Sound: "Thump thump"
Meaning: The sound of a heart beating (from excitement or nervousness).
Part 2: 의태어 (Mimicking Actions)
반짝반짝 (ban-jjak-ban-jjak)
Action: "Sparkle sparkle"
Meaning: Describes something glittering, twinkling, or sparkling brightly.
엉금엉금 (eong-geum-eong-geum)
Action: "Crawlingly"
Meaning: Describes a large person/animal moving slowly, or a baby crawling.
