High School - Grade 12
Lesson 6: No Other Choice
-(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다
"Couldn't Help But..." / "Only Option Was To..."
This final grammar point of the K-12 curriculum combines two concepts you've already learned: `-(으)ㄹ 수 있다/없다` ("can/cannot") and `밖에 + negative` ("only"). Together, they form `-(으)ㄹ 수밖에 없다`.
Literally, it means "There is nothing else possible but...", which translates more naturally to "**there is no choice but to...**", "**cannot help but...**", or "**inevitably...**". It emphasizes that a certain action or state is the only possible outcome given the circumstances.
The Conjugation Rules
This follows the same conjugation rule as `-(으)ㄹ 수 있다/없다`.
Rule 1: Vowel or ㄹ ending
Verb/Adjective stem ends in a vowel or ㄹ (drop the ㄹ).
... + ㄹ 수밖에 없다
하다 할 수밖에 없다
("No choice but to do")
가다 갈 수밖에 없다
("No choice but to go")
놀다 (ㄹ drops) 놀 수밖에 없다
("No choice but to play/hang out")
Rule 2: Consonant ending (not ㄹ)
Verb/Adjective stem ends in a consonant (other than ㄹ).
... + 을 수밖에 없다
먹다 먹을 수밖에 없다
("No choice but to eat")
믿다 믿을 수밖에 없다
("No choice but to believe")
