Lesson 4: "Like..." (처럼 / 같이)

Saying "Like" or "As" in Korean

You already know how to describe things. Now, learn how to compare them! The words 처럼 and 같이 both mean "like" or "as," but they are used slightly differently.

The Two Patterns

Pattern Meaning Example
Noun + 처럼 like / as (direct comparison) 천사처럼 예뻐요
Noun + 같이 like / as (manner or appearance) 거품같이 가벼워요

처럼 Examples

처럼 (cheo-reom)

  • 천사처럼 예뻐요 = Pretty like an angel
  • 바보처럼 행동해 = Act like a fool
  • 물처럼 마셔요 = Drink like water
  • 선생님처럼 가르쳐요 = Teach like a teacher

같이 (gat-i)

  • 눈같이 하얘요 = White like snow
  • 거품같이 가벼워 = Light like foam
  • 꿀같이 달아요 = Sweet like honey
  • 돌같이 단단해 = Hard like a rock

Usage Difference

The main difference is nuance:
처럼 = Acts in a similar way (behavior/comparison of action)
같이 = Looks or feels similar (appearance/sensation)

Key Point!

In many cases, 처럼 and 같이 can be used interchangeably! Just say whichever sounds better. Both are attached directly to nouns without a space.
