Middle School - Grade 6
Lesson 7: "I want to..." (-(으)ㄹ래요)
Expressing Wants and Intentions
To say "I want to..." or "I will..." in a casual-intention way, use -(으)ㄹ래요. This expresses a stronger personal desire than the more neutral -고 싶어요.
The Pattern
| Verb Stem | Ending | Result |
|---|---|---|
Examples: Expressing Intent
Statements
- 저는 오늘 쉴래요 = I want to rest today
- 이거 살래요 = I want to buy this
- 혼자 할래요 = I want to do it alone
- 여기 있을래요 = I want to stay here
Questions
- 뭐 먹을래요? = What do you want to eat?
- 같이 할래요? = Want to do it together?
- 어디 갈래요? = Where do you want to go?
- 언제 만날래요? = When do you want to meet?
Vs. -고 싶어요
-(으)ㄹ래요 = Stronger, more intentional. You're deciding. "I will / I want to"
Example: 커피 마실래요 (I'll have coffee)
-고 싶어요 = Softer wish. "I feel like / I wish"
Example: 커피 마시고 싶어요 (I feel like coffee)
Key Point!
Use -(으)ㄹ래요 when you're making a decision or expressing a clear intention. Use -고 싶어요 when you're just expressing a wish. Do NOT use -(으)ㄹ래요 for third person (he/she wants). Only for "I" or "you."
