Middle School - Grade 7

Lesson 13: "Decided to..."

-기로 했어요

Expressing a Decision

This grammar point is used to state a decision or resolution you have made. It's the most common way to say "I've decided to..."

It's a very simple and useful pattern for talking about your new plans, goals, or resolutions.

The Conjugation Rule

This one is incredibly easy! You just attach it directly to the verb stem, whether it ends in a vowel or a consonant.

All Action Verb Stems

... + 기로 했어요

가다 가기로 했어요

"(I) decided to go."

먹다 먹기로 했어요

"(I) decided to eat."

Examples in Action

A NEW GOAL

매일 운동하기로 했어요.

I decided to exercise every day.

A JOINT DECISION

우리는 내년에 한국에 가기로 했어요.

We decided to go to Korea next year.

A NEGATIVE DECISION

술을 마시지 않기로 했어요.

I decided to not drink alcohol.

(Note: You just add `-지 않다` to the verb stem first, then `-기로 했어요`.)

Coming Up Next...

You've learned how to talk about a decision you *made* (`-기로 했어요`). Next, let's learn how to talk about an intention you *had* in the past, even if it didn't happen: "I was going to..."
