Middle School - Grade 8

Lesson 11: "To end up..."

-게 되다

Expressing a Change in Situation

This grammar point is used with **verbs** to show a change in the situation or circumstances. It's often used when something happens that wasn't directly planned or caused by you.

It's the partner to -아/어지다 (which is for adjectives).
-아/어지다 = "to become..." (e.g., to become pretty)
-게 되다 = "to get to do..." or "to end up..." (e.g., to get to work here)

The Conjugation Rule

This rule is the easiest one of all! You just add -게 되다 to the verb stem, no matter what it ends in!

All Verb Stems (vowel or consonant)

... + 게 되다

가다 가게 되다

"to get to go"

먹다 먹게 되다

"to get to eat / to end up eating"

일하다 일하게 되다
