Middle School - Grade 8

Lesson 5: Intermediate Connectors

"Because", "If", and "When"

Making Your Sentences Smarter

You can connect simple ideas ("I studied and I slept"). Now it's time to show more complex relationships between ideas.

This lesson covers three essential "glue" grammar forms that will make your Korean sound much more fluent.

Connector 1: -(으)니까 (Because / So)

Use this to state a reason, cause, or discovery. It's often used when giving a command or making a suggestion based on that reason.

Vowel Stem: Add -니까. (e.g., `가다` `가니까`)

Consonant Stem: Add -으니까. (e.g., `먹다` `먹으니까`)

`ㄹ` Stem: Drop `ㄹ`, add -니까. (e.g., `살다` `사니까`)

비가 오니까 우산을 가져가세요.

"Because it's raining, please take an umbrella."

Connector 2: -(으)면 (If / When)

Use this to set a condition for the second clause. It means "if" or "when" (in a hypothetical sense).

Vowel or `ㄹ` Stem: Add -면. (e.g., `가다` `가면`, `살다` `살면`)

Consonant Stem: Add -으면. (e.g., `먹다` `먹으면`)

시간이 있으면 영화를 볼 거예요.

"If I have time, I will watch a movie."

Connector 3: -(으)ㄹ 때 (When)

Use this to talk about the specific time *when* an action happens. (This is different from the hypothetical "if/when" of `-(으)면`!)

Vowel or `ㄹ` Stem: Add -ㄹ 때. (e.g., `가다` `갈 때`, `살다` `살 때`)

Consonant Stem: Add -을 때. (e.g., `먹다` `먹을 때`)

공부할 때 음악을 들어요.

"When I study, I listen to music."

Coming Up Next...

Congratulations! You have completed all of Middle School! You can describe nouns in any tense, use complex connectors, and speak with the correct politeness.

You are now ready for **High School**. In Grade 9, we'll start with very advanced grammar, like changing "I eat the pizza" into "The pizza *is eaten*."
