Middle School - Grade 8

Lesson 8: "If you intend to..."

-(으)려면

Expressing a Condition & Intention

This is a fantastic grammar point for giving advice! It's a combination of two patterns you already know:

-(으)려고 ("in order to...") + -(으)면 ("if...") = -(으)려면 ("If you intend to...")

You use it to set up a goal, and then follow it with the action required to achieve that goal.

The Conjugation Rules

This follows the exact same conjugation rules as `-(으)려고` and `-(으)면`.

Stem ends in Vowel or ㄹ

... + 려면

가다 가려면

"If you intend to go..."

만들다 만들려면

"If you intend to make..."

Stem ends in Consonant (except ㄹ)

... + 으려면

먹다 먹으려면

"If you intend to eat..."

찾다 찾으려면

"If you intend to find..."

Examples in Action

한국어를 잘하려면 매일 공부해야 해요.

STATING A REQUIREMENT

그 책을 찾으려면 도서관에 가야 돼요.

If you intend to find that book, you have to go to the library.

Coming Up Next...

You've learned how to give advice based on intentions. Next, let's learn how to talk about "concession" — what you do "even if" a certain condition is true.
